As specified by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act), U-Speak is committed to the responsible collection, handling, storage, protection and destruction of personal information to respect the privacy of our users.

This policy applies to all operations and services of the website, U-Speak, developed by UNICEF Australia (UA). This policy may be accessed by any person who has dealings with U-Speak and UA. This policy is accessible publicly via the website and on UA’s website.

U-Speak collects and uses personal information to provide the appropriate services and activities suitable to the vision of the website.
The purpose of U-Speak obtaining this information will be made clear at the time of collection. The collection of personal information will be lawful, fair, reasonable and unobtrusive, in accordance with relevant legislation.

As the vision of U-Speak is to amplify the voices of young people by creating conversations around important topics and gathering these insights to share with decision-makers.

U-Speak collects information through:

– Engagement via social media
3.4 Consent
By logging conversations data, users consent to the reasonable collection, use and disclosure of personal information. Consent is directly implied in the process. Alternatively, consent may be indirectly implied (for example, personal information is given in order to send information regarding the follow up or other initiatives).
Before seeking a person’s consent to collect information, U-Speak will inform the user about:
– What kinds of information we wish to collect and our purpose for collecting such information

U-Speak will disclose personal information to organisations/individuals outside the organisation in order to provide the service and vision of the application. The consent of the individual will be sort prior to any disclosure of personal information. Disclosure of personal information will be in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles.
Personal information may be disclosed to:
– UA internal team
– Government officials i.e. Ministers
– There is a serious and imminent threat to a person’s life, health or safety
– Government, Regulatory and other organizations, as required or authorized by law such as child protection agencies
– For reporting purposes to contract managers and funding sources
3.6 Accuracy of Personal Information
U-Speak takes all reasonable steps to correct any information as required, and ensure that the personal information collected, used and disclosed is accurate, complete, up to date and relevant whenever it is collected, used or disclosed. However, the accuracy of that information depends to a large extent on the information the person provides.
3.7 Storage, Security and Protection of Personal information
Information collected on users is stored securely. U-Speak takes all practical steps to protect personal information from misuse, loss and interference. Safeguarding information can be stored for 45 years under Australian laws.
U-Speak gives users the option to remain anonymous.
3.8 Breaches of Personal Information
In the unlikely event of a security breach, or an eligible data breach, it will be dealt with according to current procedures maintained by UA.
3.9 Accessing and Updating Personal Information
Users have the right to access their personal information. Users can access their information by contacting U-Speak.
3.10 Disclosure of Personal Information
For the vision set out above, U-Speak will extract information from the website to produce aggregated data. This aggregated data does not identify individuals and therefore does not contain personal information. U-Speak uses the data for research purposes and to share them with third parties like government officials and other decision-makers to ensure the voices of users are heard.
